Deuteronomy 21:1-9 — Solving the mystery of the slain man in the field [New Creation Church midweek service, Fri, Aug 5, 2005

Excerpts of the 5 August 2005 sermon only.  My notes.

Deuteronomy 21:1-9 (KJV)

"1 If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him: 2 Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain: 3 And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke; 4 And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley: 5 And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word F66 shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: 6 And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley: 7 And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. 8 Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them. 9 So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD."

Jesus is a typified as the innocent man who is sinless who is found slain in verse 1 of Deuteronomy 21. HE is also typified as the heifer which is sacrificed as atonement. HOW wonderful this is! Jesus who is without sin and innocent yet He bore our sins on the Cross and He himself provided the sacrifice and propitiation for those sins.

[TY's comment: Ada R. Habershon writes in her book "Study of the Types" that "There is a striking typical scene in Deut. xxi. which, it has been pointed out, is a picture of God's great inquest over His Son. One is found slain in the field, and enquiry has to be made as to who is guilty; when the city nearest to the dead body has been condemned, the heifer is slain to remove their guilt. Here, surely, we have another double type; for the Lord's death is foreshadowed in the one found slain and in the heifer: the first telling of the guilt of His murderers; the other of how the guilt has been met."]

Contrast this with Matthew 27:1-25

In Matthew 27, we see the that the innocent man slain in the field is Jesus Christ. The nearest city was Jerusalem. However, the leadership in this context took a completely opposite track from that of Deuteronomy 21. They refused the mercy and propiatiation of Jesus’ blood sacrifice. In fact, the leadership proclaimed that the innocent blood of Jesus be “on them” (Matthew 27:24). They forsook the mercies and forgiveness of GOD! By implication, the guilt of shedding innocent blood would remain charged to them. We witness that the next few centuries following the events of Matthew 27 testify that the nation Israel did plunge into a cycle of diaspora and violent persecution and genocide. All because, they refused their Saviour’s protection and offer of redemption.

Deuteronomy 21:5

“And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be [tried]“

Wherever priests are mentioned in the Bible, the office refers to: custodians of the LORD’s mercy and grace. Notice that we, Believers, in the New Covenant are now priests and kings! What a privilege we have — we can draw near to the LORD and worship Him! Moreover, by our “word shall every controversy and every stroke be”

The word “tried” is in italics in the KJV which means that there was no Hebrew word from which it was translated from.

As Believers, the LORD has given us power in the words of our mouth.

When we come up against false and bad reports, and lying symptons which the devil confronts us with, our response must be to use our mouths to speak the Word of GOD, because by our “word shall every controversy and every stroke be”.

What we decree with our mouths, it shall “be”!

If we are faced with an apparently difficult trial, we say “God has caused me to triumph” and it shall “be”.

When we as Royal Priesthood Vs the devil, we win, always. ‘Cause the devil is no priest.

When we look at the words “controversy” and “stroke”, we see clearer what we have been delivered from.

The word “controversy” is רב / ריב or Strongs’ #7379 which means (a) strife, quarrel (b) dispute, controversy, case at law.

The word “stroke” is נגע or Strongs’ #5061 which means

1) stroke, plague, disease, mark, plague spot

1a) stroke, wound

1b) stroke (metaphorical of disease)

1c) mark (of leprosy)
